Explanation
Calcium carbide reacts with the water and formed acetylene gas & calcium hydroxide. Acetylene is a flammable gas.
Reaction:- CaC2(s) + 2H2O(l) → C2H2(g) + Ca(OH)2
s = solid , l = liquid , g = gas
Uses
1) In Industries calcium carbide stone is used mainly to formed acetylene gas which is used for welding and cutting. (oxyacetylene flame)
2) Acetylene gas used for ripping agent.
It's ripe Bananas and some other fruits.
3) Calcium carbide and water reacts and they also formed by product calcium hydroxide which is used for bricks and cement. ( Slaked lime )
Warning
Pure calcium carbide stone is not a harmful substance and when it reacts with water no toxic byproducts are formed.
But sometimes its content arsenic and phosphorus . When this substance reacts with water they formed phosphine and arcine gas which is harmful for health.
